Two years have passed since the shocking and mysterious death of South Korean internet personality BJ Ah-Young (real name Byun Ah-young) in Cambodia, yet the full truth behind the incident continues to remain out of reach.

On June 6, 2023, Ah-Young’s body was discovered in a disturbing state, wrapped in a red cloth and left in a puddle in a remote village in Kandal Province, not far from the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh. The grisly scene prompted an immediate investigation by local authorities.

A Chinese couple who operated a medical clinic nearby was soon arrested and charged with abandoning a corpse. According to their statement, Ah-Young had visited their clinic on June 4, complaining of illness, and suddenly died during treatment from what they claimed was a seizure. They admitted to panicking and disposing of her body.

Records show that Ah-Young entered Cambodia on June 2 and received an IV or serum injection at the clinic two days later. However, as details emerged, Cambodian authorities began to raise serious questions—not just about the clinic’s legitimacy, but also the possibility of sexual assault.

The case was spotlighted in an episode of SBS’s Unanswered Questions, where forensic experts pointed to asphyxiation as the likely cause of death, contrary to claims of a seizure. Although no external injuries or signs of torture were found and drug tests came back negative, several troubling details were noted: Ah-Young was not wearing a bra, and her underwear was on backwards, fueling suspicions of potential sexual violence.

The husband of the clinic operator, who remains detained, offered his own version of events: “She asked me to give her an injection, but I didn’t. She already had injection marks on her body. When I didn’t give her the injection, she fell asleep. Later, I saw she was foaming at the mouth and unconscious, so I gave her emergency medication and oxygen, but she passed away.”

Despite these accounts and ongoing public scrutiny, the case has yet to reach a definitive conclusion. Key questions about how and why Ah-Young died, and whether foul play was involved, remain unanswered.
